3 Simple Key's to Buying the Right Chainsaw Chain

Posted November 23 2018

When it's time to purchase a new Chainsaw Chain and you get that "I really don't feel like trying to figure this out".   Along with, "Here goes another $30".

Here at PartMart we try to make this experience as easy as possible for you by training our staff to either look-up your chain by model number or by reading the numbers on your chain.  Our store's are small allowing you to get in and out and back to work without having to walk through a warehouse to find a chain.

3 Keys to Buying the Right Chainsaw Chain are:

1)  PITCH - the most common pitches are 3/8", 3/8" low profile, or .325".  Pitch is the distance between your draglinks and it is critical because the sprocket drum teeth and the bar sprocket tip teeth are set of for a certain pitch.

2) GAUGE - the most common gauges for consumer use saws are .050", .058", or .063".  Gauge is the thickness of the draglink that fits into the groove on your bar.

3) DRIVE LINKS - these are the individual links that make up your chain.  This will depend on your bar size.

There are other, more specific things to consider that affect the way the saw cuts like chisel, semi-chisel, bumper link or no bumper link, but these will not effect whether the chain will fit your saw or not.

Most brands of chain have this information stamped on the individual links of the chain, but the problem is knowing what that particular brand's numbering system means.

PartMart's Bar & Chain Look-up page has some great resources to help you figure out what chain you need.
